Senior citizen of the year

McFadyen is a man for all ages

Mississauga's Senior Citizen of the Year said he's found no greater reward than the feeling he gets from trying to help others.

Eldon McFadyen, 63, was recognized Thursday night at the Mississauga Seniors Centre.

"I get a lot more out of this than I ever put into it," he told the gathering. " I know we can all give back a little of what we've gained."

McFadyen, who was accompanied by his wife and four children - he also has six grandchildren - is this year's recipient of the Walter P. Kohlmeier Award.

Making the presentation was Scotty Munroe from the Port Credit Rotary Club that has teamed with the City of Mississauga to sponsor the Senior Citizen of the Year Award for 18 years. The Kohlmeier Award is presented to a person aged 60 or older who has made a significant contribution to the Mississauga community.

Traditionally, the winner isn't known until he or she is announced at the annual Christmas dinner at the Mississauga Seniors Centre on Cawthra Rd.

Rotarian Kohlmeier, a long-time booster of seniors until he died three years ago, was a major force behind the creation of the award. The Port Credit Rotary Club named the annual award after him and it's now presented each year by his widow, Claire.
